1994년에 출간된 김지하 시인의 시집이다. 표제작인 <중심의 괴로움>을 포함하여 64편의 시가 수록되어 있다. 이 시집에서는 이전까지 발표해왔던 저항시, 풍자시와 같은 정치적인 시들과 성격이 다른 김지하 시인의 '생명 사상'의 단초를 확인할 수 있다. 중심을 벗어난 틈과 여백의 시어를 통해 생명을 노래하는 새로운 시세계를 보여준다고 평가된다.

Published in 1994, The Agony of the Center by Kim Ji-ha contains 64 poems, including the title poem. Moving away from the satire and resistance poetry that characterized his earlier work, this collection of poems represents a new direction in Kim’s poetry, in particular his “ideology of life.” Offering a distinctive new poetics of gaps and blank spaces that stray off-center, his poems sing of life.
