Plot

The narrator recalls a young woman he met at the age of twenty while listening to ‘Pavane for a Dead Princess’. They fall in love, bonding over a shared traumatic past, but eventually she leaves him, unable to overcome her insecurities over her appearance. After a decades-long long search, he heads to Germany when he learns that she is living there.

Pavane for a Dead Princess is a novel by Park Min-gyu that was published in 2009. Park has received critical acclaim for his experimental and unconventional approach. Unlike his previous novels, which employ kitschy humor and a subversive worldview, Pavane for a Dead Princess explores the wounded inner lives of its characters, who are affected by the beauty-fetish that runs rampant in Seoul during the 1980s.
