Rickshaw man Kim Cheomji goes to work, leaving his wife, who has been ill for ten days, behind. On this lucky day, he makes a huge sum of 30 won. After finishing work a little late, he grabs a drink with his friend Chi-sam and returns home to his wife with a bowl of seolleongtang. Upon returning home, he finds his wife dead. Next to her corpse, baby Gae-ttong sits crying.

This is a short story by Hyun Jin-geon, published in the 48th issue of Gaebyeok in June 1924. Through the ironic life of Kim Cheomji whose wife died on the day he thought himself lucky for having earned a huge sum, this story shows the tragic life of a poor laborer. It is recognized for revealing the realities of the lower class in colonial Korea.

1924년 6월 『개벽』 48호에 발표된 현진건의 단편소설이다. 돈을 많이 벌어 운수가 좋다고 여긴 날에 아내가 죽은 김첨지의 아이러니한 삶을 통해 가난한 노동자의 비참한 현실을 보여준다. 식민지 하층민의 삶을 핍진하게 드러내었다는 평가를 받는다.
