Plot

Oh Hyun Woo engages in underground activities to resist the military dictatorship in the 1970s, and after the Gwangju Democratization Movement in May 1980, he becomes wanted by the police, and so he flees to the countryside. He spends three months with Han Yoon Hee, who works as an art teacher in the countryside, and they fall in love. Many years pass since, and Hyun Woo, who was arrested, is released from prison after serving 18 years. Yoon Hee goes to study art in Germany, where she meets Yi Hee Soo, but he dies in an unexpected car accident. After returning to Korea, Yoon Hee raises Hyun Woo's daughter and eventually dies of an incurable disease.

This is a novel by Hwang Sok-yong, published in 2000. It was originally serialized in a daily newspaper in 1999, and it was adapted into a film in 2007. It deals with personal narratives and world historical changes such as the democratization movement of Korean society that swept through the 1980s and the collapse of socialist countries.

2000년에 출간된 황석영의 장편소설이다. 1999년 일간지에 연재했던 작품을 수정해서 출간한 것이며, 2007년에 영화로 만들어 졌다. 작품은 80년대를 휩쓸었던 한국사회의 민주화 운동 그리고 사회주의국가들의 붕괴 등 세계사적 변화와 개인의 서사를 함께 다뤘다.
