After the Korean War, her leftist husband is arrested by the police, and the protagonist lives without knowing whether her husband is alive or dead. She is robbed and raped, and eventually gives birth to her second son, Seong-ho. Thirty years pass, and Seong-guk, the first son, becomes a civil servant, but he is unable to be promoted because of his leftist father. The second son, Seong-ho, is on the run from the authorities for participating in the student movement. After her two sons fight over the younger son’s problem, the protagonist decides to remove the tooth that has been tormenting her so far, hold an ancestral rite for her husband, and reveal the truth about the birth of Seong-ho.

This is a short story by Lee Chang-dong, published in 1985. The historical tragedy of the Korean War and the division of the Korean Peninsula is revealed through the story of a family. This author seeks ways to overcome historical tragedy and depicts the conflict between the generation who experienced the war directly and the generation who indirectly experienced it.
