After the Korean War, her leftist husband is arrested by the police, and the protagonist lives without knowing whether her husband is alive or dead. She is robbed and raped, and eventually gives birth to her second son, Seong-ho. Thirty years pass, and Seong-guk, the first son, becomes a civil servant, but he is unable to be promoted because of his leftist father.
