Plot

Thinking that the cause of his father's death was not the gas explosion but the debt collector Lee Su-ho, Yun Se-oh decides to take revenge. Meanwhile, Shin Ki-jeong hears that her half-brother Shin Ha-jeong has been found drowned in the river. Feeling sorry for her younger brother, she retrieves his body and holds a funeral for him. Then, she discovers something strange on her brother Ha-jeong's phone and begins to investigate. Se-oh's revenge and Ki-jeong's investigation unfold in unexpected directions, and the two try to shake off their guilt.

This is a novel by Hyun Hye Young, published in 2015. The author, who has portrayed the cruel reality as is, does not change her tendency in this work. She vividly depicts the process in which the protagonist, who loses his father becomes dissatisfied with the world, decides to take revenge on the person who he considers to have led his father to death. It makes the readers feel the sorrow of life through the characters who search for ways to continue living, as if nothing can change the reality full of death and malice.

2015년 출간된 편혜영의 장편소설이다. 잔혹한 현실을 가감없이 그려온 작가는 이 작품에서도 그러한 경향을 바꾸지 않는다. 작가는 아버지를 잃은 주인공이 세상에 불만을 품고 아버지를 죽음으로 이끈 것으로 판단한 자에게 복수를 결심하는 과정을 핍진하게 그린다. 죽음과 악의로 가득한 현실을 바꿀 수 있는 것은 아무것도 없다는 듯 삶을 지속하기 위한 방법을 모색하는 인물들을 통해 삶의 비의를 느낄 수 있다.
