Plot

Kyung-hee, a theater actor who specializes in recitation plays, is depressed about decreasing job opportunities and feels numb to everything her life . Then one day, she hears that her German teacher is in critical condition and leaves for a strange city with a glum heart. After arriving in a European city, Kyung-hee meets people with special names, such as Mr. Nobody, Maria, a healer, and an Asian man, and collaborates with them to put on a play. The play is composed of each person’s story, and Kyung-hee performs recitations on stage in her own voice.

This is a novel by Bae Su-ah, published in 2011. It was originally serialized online from the spring to summer of 2011, and later published in the book form. Through the text that is on the border of fiction and essay, the author presents the problem of existence the protagonist feels, as she becomes distant from and numb to reality while traveling through a city. This novel is referred to as “non-narrative fiction,” and it can be can be seen as a fiction that depicts humans on the boundaries.

2011년 출간된 배수아의 장편소설이다. 2011년 봄부터 여름까지 인터넷카페에 연재했던 작품을 모아서 출간했다. 작가는 무감각해지는 현실에서 점점 멀어지는  주인공이 도시를 여행하면서 느끼는 존재의 문제를 소설과 에세이의 경계에 걸친 글쓰기를 통해 제시하고 있다. 일명 '비서사의 소설'로 불리어지는 이 작품은 경계에 위치하는 존재들을 소설로 형상화한 것이라고 볼 수 있다.
