1977년 출판된 오정희의 첫 창작집이다. 데뷔작인 <완구점 여인>과 표제작인 <불의 강>을 비롯하여 총 12편의 단편소설이 수록되어 있다. 오정희 초기작들의 특징인 자기파괴적 욕망, 안식처로부터 끊임없이 달아나려는 아내와 남편들, 고립된 존재들의 이야기가 묘사되어있다.

Published in 1977, this first collection by Oh Jung Hee introduces 12 of her short stories including the title story “River of Fire” and “The Toyshop Woman.” The stories are about women with self-destructive desires, women and their husbands running away from their homes, and alienated people, all of which are characteristic of her early work.
