Plot

Bae Jeom-su, a servant of the prestigious Shin family, hates his father, who is loyal to the Shin family. When the Korean War breaks out, he takes the lead to accuse and punish the Shin family as reactionary. After the war is over, he relentlessly accumulates wealth and becomes the president of a large company. He hides his family’s servant past and reinvents himself as an independence activist and anti-communist fighter. However, when his ugly past is exposed, he dies painfully from the shock.

This is a novel by Cho Chong-Rae, published in 1983. This is a collection of related short stories, such as “Ingan yeonseup (Human practice),” “Inganui mun (Human door),” “Inganui gyedan (Human stairs),” and “Inganui tap (Human tower).”Personal hatred and hostility are intertwined with ideological conflicts, resulting in a human tragedy in which truth and lies are reversed. It shows the process in which individuals’ problems are expanded to the demands of group ideology.

1983년 출간된 조정래의 장편소설이다. 이 작품은 「인간연습」, 「인간의 문」, 「인간의 계단」, 「인간의 탑」 등 연작 성격의 작품들을 하나의 장편으로 모은 것이다. 개인의 증오와 적개심이 이념 대립와 얽히며 진실과 거짓이 뒤바뀌는 인간 비극을 형상화하고 있다. 개인의 문제가 집단 이념의 요구로 확대되어 가는 과정을 형상화하고 있다고 평가된다.
