Plot

After the death of her parents, Gomnyeo grows up with the Pear Tree House Granny, and when she turns 12, she goes to live at the house of the farm owner in Saem Village. After losing her virginity to the owner, Kim Man-jang and his son, she is sold to work at a pub in Seoul. There, Gomnyeo meets Sanogi and Jusimi, and Hareuban (grandfather), who is the first person in her life to treat her. After Korea’s liberation from the Japanese rule, Hareuban gives her a house to live in, but she changes her mind and decides to go to a relief-aid center.

This is Hwang Sun-Won's first novel, published in 1950. It deals with the tragic life of Gomnyeo from the colonial period to the liberation period. It is regarded as a work that addresses the problem of human salvation through a character who overcomes the difficulties in life with good intentions and affection even in the face of adversity.

1950년 출간된 황순원의 첫 장편소설이다. 식민지 시기부터 광복에 이르는 시기까지 곰녀의 비극적 삶을 다루고 있다. 역경 속에서도 선의와 애정으로 삶을 극복하는 모습을 통해 인간 구원의 문제를 다루는 작품으로 평가된다.
