2013년에 출간된 이청준의 단편소설집이다. <서편제>를 포함하여 1976년부터 1977년 사이에 발표된 단편소설 13편이 수록되어 있다. 표제작인 <서편제>는 '남도 사람' 연작의 첫 작품으로, '소리'를 통해 한(限)을 극복해나가는 인물의 삶을 형상화하고 있다. 인간의 존재적 삶과 관계적 삶을 모색하는 작품들이라 평가된다.

Published in 2013, this collection introduces 13 of Yi Chong-jun's short stories which were written from 1976 to 1977. The title story “Seopyeonje” is also the first story in his Namdo People series. In “Seopyeonje,” which foregrounds the genre of pansori, the characters search for meaning in their relationships and lives, and they overcome trials and hardships as they pursue the life of a pansori singer.
