Plot

Ahn Yeong-gyu, who fights in the Vietnam War, faces the horrific death of civilians in a war waged for the sake of empires. In addition, more and more people try to make a profit by trading war supplies in the war-ravaged country, where enemies and allies are entangled on the battlefield. Ahn Yeong-gyu is distress, as he wonders who this war is for.

This is a novel by Hwang Sok-yong, published in 1988. Based on the author’s own experience, this novel depicts the horrors of the Vietnam War and the nature of the war, which continued to the mid-1970s.
