Plot
This novel tells the story of the rise and fall of Pak Seong-gwon’s family against the backdrop of the Enlightenment period. When his father, Pak Sun-il dies, leaving the family on the verge of bankruptcy, Park Seong-gwon uses the Sino-Japanese War as an opportunity to rebuild his family fortunes. From his wife and concubine, he begets four sons, each of whom has different temperaments, which becomes the cause of constant conflict in the family.
