건국신화인 <단군신화>에 등장하는 민족의 시조인 단군왕검의 어머니다. 웅녀는 지신(地神)의 의미를 지는데, 이는 민족의 기원, 즉 민족이 비롯된 땅을 상징하는 것이다.

Ungnyeo is the mother of Dangun, the legendary founder and god-king of the first Korean kingdom. Ungnyeo is considered an earth god and symbolizes the land which gave birth to the nation of Korea.
