1926년에 첫 출간된 한용운의 시집이다. 표제시인 <님의 침묵>과 <알 수 없어요>, <복종> 등 88편의 시가 수록되어 있다. 일제식민지 시기 일본의 민족 탄압과 표현의 자유 제한에 대한 문학적 저항으로 주로 해석되고 있으나, '님'이라는 시어는 연인, 조국, 민족, 진리, 부처 등 다양한 방식으로 해석될 여지가 있다. 정통적인 정신과 방법을 현대적으로 확대, 심화시켰다는 평가를 받는다.

This collection of Han Yong-un’s poems was published in 1926. The book introduces 88 of his poems, including the title poem “The Silence of Love,” “I Do Not Know,” and “Obedience.” His poems are recognized as a form of resistance against the Japanese occupation and their suppression of free speech; however, Han’s idea of “love” can be interpreted as love for one’s beloved, nation, truth, or Buddha. His poetry not only expanded, but also deepened and modernized traditional poetic spirit and language.
