Plot

When her son, who participated in a demonstration calling for democracy, gets beaten by the police with an iron pipe and dies, the narrator lose the meaning of life and wanders for a while. As she comes to realize and understand the process that led to her son's death and its meaning, she make changes in her life, such as joining the Family Association for Democracy. However, she learns that even these attempts are pretentious acts to forget her son's death.

This is a short story by Park Wansuh, published in the fall issue of Sangsang in 1993. Through a phone conversation between two people, this story conveys the grief of a mother who lost her son during a democratization movement in the 1980s. By exposing heavy and sensitive political and social issues through light chatter, the story questions the meaning of the bleak reality.

1993년 <상상>가을호에 발표한 박완서의 단편이다. 1980년대 민주화 운동을 하던 아들을 잃은 어머니의 슬픔을 두 사람의 전화 통화 형식으로 구성했다. 정치적, 사회적으로 무겁고 예민한 문제를 가벼운 '수다'로 드러내면서 어두운 현실의 의미를 되묻고 있다.
