Hwang Sun-won (1915-2000) is one of modern Korea's masters of narrative prose. Trees on a Slope (1960) is his most accomplished novel - one of the few Korean novels to describe in detail the physical and psychological horrors of the Korean War. It is an assured, forceful depiction of three young soldiers in the South Korean army during the latter stages of the war: Hyon-t'ae, the arrogant and overconfident squad leader; the stolid and dependable Yun-gu; and the Poet Tong-ho. The war affects the men in different ways. Before he can return home, Tong-ho takes his own life after shooting an officer and a prostitute. Hyon-t'ae, finding himself removed from situations of mortal danger, spends most of his time drinking; in the end he is arrested for abetting in the suicide of a young girl. Only Yun-gu is able to make the successful transition to postwar life. His ability to survive the encroachments of others, exploit limited resources, and capitalize on the lessons of harsh experience make him emblematic of Korea over the centuries. Trees on a Slope will introduce an English-reading audience to an important voice in modern Asian literature.

Arbitrairement scindée au 38e parallèle à l'issue de la Seconde Guerre mondiale, la Corée est, de 1950 à 1953, mise à feu et à sang par une guerre fratricide qui la laisse toujours divisée. Les Arbres sur la falaise révèle que les hommes pris dans cet engrenage en sortent traumatisés. Trop peureux pour être soldat, ballotté entre le rêve de pureté et la réalité de la vie, Dongho se donne la mort, absurdement. L'intrépide Hyontae, miné par le remords de son crime, se noie dans l'alcool, mène une vie désœuvrée marginale, commet malgré lui un autre meurtre qui le conduit à la détention perpétuelle. Malgré son contenu tragique, ce roman foisonnant de symboles et d'images n'est pas une cour fermée. Il s'ouvre sur la Vie et l'Espoir. Los árboles en la cuesta de Hwang Sun-won es una novela sobre la guerra coreana, donde la guerra es la protagonista de principio a fin. Los seres humanos no son más que simples actores del libreto bélico. Todos, sin excepción, están traumados y anestesiados por la guerra. Los combatientes en los frentes, los que quedan en la retaguardia y los civiles que siguen de lejos los acontecimientos, todos están heridos, nadie queda ileso. Los hijos de la guerra son personajes huecos que tratan de llevar su vacuidad con tabaco, licor, sexo y muerte. El seductor y ágil relato sigue los pasos de tres jóvenes soldados sudcoreanos enviados al frente de combate. Los tres, jugándose la vida a cada instante, terminan hermanados y necesitándose para sobrevivir y comprobar que todavía están vivos. „Bäume am Abhang“ beschreibt auf subtile und facettenreiche Weise die verheerenden Auswirkungen des Koreakriegs auf die Psyche der jungen Männer, die als Soldaten darin kämpfen müssen. Drei Kameraden durchleben die Wirrnisse dieser Zeit in offenen Schlachten, im Beschuss feindlicher Artillerie oder auf Patrouille zwischen den Fronten. Sachlich und unspektakulär geht es dabei zumeist zu und doch spürt man, wie die bewaffnete Auseinandersetzung die Figuren vom Leben entfremdet. Tong-Ho, den die anderen „Poet“ nennen, ist empfindsam und leidet am Offensichtlichsten, zerbricht aber letztlich an seiner Liebe zu einer Frau, von der er zu Beginn des Kriegs getrennt wurde. Für den furchtlosen Gruppenführer Hyeon-Tae erweist sich, dass mit dem Austritt aus der Armee ein stützendes Korsett entfällt, das seinem Dasein Sinn und Richtung gegeben hatte. Er kommt mit den Gegebenheiten der Nachkriegsgesellschaft nicht zurecht und driftet ziellos durchs Leben.
