Geumo Sinhwa, written in Chinese characters by Kim Siseup and published in 1653, is a collection of five novellas: The Story about Playing a Game of Jeopo at Manbok Temple, The Tale of Yi Looking over the Wall, The Story of Drinking at Bubyeok Pavilion, The Story about South Yeombuju, and The Story about an Invitation to a Feast in the Dragon Palace. Considered the very first Korean fiction, the stories in the collection criticize the hypocrisy and immorality of the royal court during the Joseon dynasty, and portray common people who are estranged from and neglected by their rulers.
