Plot

Gojuk is a gifted calligrapher and Seokdam’s student. Seokdam keeps a distance from Gojuk, emphasizing the cultivation of one’s mind over calligraphic skills. Gojuk is in conflict with Seokdam, who pays no heed to the matters of earning a living. One day, just before his death, Gojuk brings together all of his works in one place and sets them on fire, and there he sees an hallucination of a golden-winged bird.

This is a short story by Yi Mun-yol, published in Hyundae Munhak in December 1981. It deliberates on the meaning of art through the conversations between the two calligraphers Seokdam and Gojuk. It embraces aestheticism, which argues that art should exist for the sake of art.

1981년12월<현대문학>에 발표한 이문열의 단편이다. 서예가인 석담과 고죽의 대화를 통해 예술이란 무엇인가를 논하고 있다. 예술은 그 자체로 존재해야 한다는 예술지상주의를 옹호하고 있다.
