“Pachinko” by Korean American author Min Jin Lee is a compelling saga following Koreans who settle in Japan where Koreans endure racial discrimination. “Pachinko” is also the name of a slot machine game that Lee uses well as a metaphor. Those pin balls can fall anywhere. The novel, a product of thorough research, covers four generations of Korean exiles and has earned many positive reviews. Lee’s opening sentence captures the tragedy to come: “History has failed us, but no matter.” Of course, it does matter. “Pachinko” was a 2017 finalist for the National Book Award for fiction. The plot is episodic.
