Choi Il-nam (born 1932) is a South Korean writer.
Life
Born in Jeonju, North Jeolla Province, Choi Il-nam graduated from Seoul National University in 1957 with a degree in Korean language and literature. He received his Ph.D. in Korean literature from Korea University in 1960 and embarked on a career that combined journalism and fiction writing. He served as the head of the culture department at Minguk Daily, the Kyunghyang Shinmun, and the Dong-a Ilbo, the last at which he held the position of editor-in-chief until 1980.
Choi made his literary debut in 1953 when his short story "Ssuk iyagi" (쑥 이야기 On Mugwort) was recommended to the literary journal Munye. He is the recipient of the Woltan Literary Award for Seoul saramdeul (서울 사람들 People of Seoul) and the Yi Sang Literary Award for Heureuneun buk (흐르는 북 Drum Roll), among others.
Writing
After publishing fewer than two dozen stories in the 1950s and 1960s, Choi became more prolific in the 1970s, which featured his first book of fiction, Seoul saramdeul. Choi Il-nam's fiction falls into two broad categories. His works prior to 1980 often portray a person from the countryside coming to the rapidly urbanizing and industrializing city where they succeed in building a new life. Despite the characters’ success, however, the industrializing city is always shown to be founded on the relative poverty of the countryside, pointing to the sacrifice of the latter in achieving the success of the former.
In his early novels, Choi wished to show the dark side of industrial development. Following his forced dismissal from journalism in 1980, Choi's stories shifted to a more intense criticism of social reality. But rather than landing sharp attacks on society, his later works are constructed so as to point to everyday human egotism existing in pockets across the social landscape, or to describe powerless individuals alienated by power.

생애
최일남은 1932년 전라북도 전주에서 태어났다. 전주사범학교를 거쳐 1952년 서울대학교 문리대 국문과에 입학하여 1956년 졸업하고, 1958년 고려대학교 대학원에 입학하여 1960년 수료하였다. 1953년 《문예》에 〈쑥 이야기〉를 발표하고, 1956년 《현대문학》에 소설 〈파양〉이 추천되어 등단하였다. 이후 〈진달래〉 등의 단편을 발표했지만, 1960년대에는 언론인으로서 주로 활동했다. 1973년부터 〈빼앗긴 자리〉, 〈노란 봉투〉 등을 발표하면서 창작활동을 재개하였다.
작가는 1959년 《민국일보》 문화부장을 시작으로 《경향신문》과 《동아일보》의 문화부장을 지냈고, 1980년 《동아일보》편집부 국장에서 해직될 때까지 언론 활동에 주력했다. 1984년 《동아일보》 논설위원으로 복직했다. 이후 1988년 《한겨레》신문 논설고문을 지냈고, 1999년, ‘80년 해직언론인협의회’ 고문과 방송문화진흥회 이사를 맡았다.
작품 세계
최일남은 역사 속에 기록되지 않은 개인과 도시에 비해 상대적으로 낙후된 시골, 시골 출신의 도시인들이 느끼는 부채의식 그리고 늙음과 죽음 등 삶을 구성하는 시간을 작품의 주제로 삼아왔다.
소설집 《타령》(1977)은 가난하고 소박한 사람들의 이야기를 수록한 작품집이다. 표제작인〈타령〉은 1976년 11월 《현대문학》에 발표한 작품으로, 시장 사람들의 풋풋한 삶이 다섯 편의 콩트에 모아져 있다. 죽음과 사랑, 생계를 위한 밥벌이 등 특별하지 않지만 일상을 구성하는 순간들에 관한 이야기다.
소설집 《아주 느린 시간》(2000)은 한국 문학에서 드물게, ‘노년의 시간’을 소설적 소재와 주제로 삼은 8편의 작품을 묶은 것이다. ‘노년 연작’으로 부를 수 있는 작품들을 통해 작가는 노년의 일상이 현재와 밀접하며, 역설적인 동경을 지니고 있음을 말하고 있다.
소설집 《석류》(2004)는 거시적이기보다는 미시적인, 기록된 역사가 아닌, 역사를 개인의 몸으로 살아낸 소시민들의 일상을 해학과 회한, 그리고 추억의 방식으로 담았다.
소설집 《국화 밑에서》(2017)는 표제작을 비롯해 모두 7편을 묶었다. 이번 책에 수록된 작품들은 죽음이 결코 낯설지 않은 노년의 실존과 내면에 초점을 맞춰 인간의 삶이 지닌 비애와 웃음을 동시에 담아내었다.
