Bora Chung (born 1976) is a South Korean novelist, translator, and activist.
Life
Bora Chung was born in Seoul. She completed her undergraduate studies in English and Russian literature at Yonsei University and holds an M.A. in Russian and East European studies from Yale University and a Ph.D. in Slavic literatures from Indiana University. Her first short story, "Meori" (머리 The Head) won the 1998 Yonsei Literature Prize. She won the 3rd Digital Writers' Awards' Distinction Award in 2008 for her novella "Ho" (호 The Fox), and her short story "Ssiat" (씨앗 The Seed) won second prize at the 2014 Gwacheon Science Center SF Awards. Chung's stories are often dark and magical narratives about strong women who fight to survive in an unjust, violent world. She is the author of the novels Bulgeun kal (붉은 칼 The Red Sword), Muni yeollyeotda (문이 열렸다 The Door Opened), Jugeun jaui kkum (죽은 자의 꿈 Dreams of the Dead); the short story collections Geunyeoreul mannada (그녀를 만나다 Meeting Her), Jeoju tokki (저주토끼 Cursed Bunny), Wangui changnyeo (왕의 창녀 The King’s Prostitute), and Ssiat. Her short story collection Cursed Bunny was shortlisted for the 2022 International Booker Prize. Her translations include The Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov, The Seven Churches by Miloš Urban, and The Marriage by Witold Gombrowicz. She currently serves as president of the Science Fiction Writers Union of Korea (SFWUK).
Writing
Bora Chung fell in love with strange, fantastic stories by Eastern European writers while majoring in Russian language and literature in college. The International Booker shortlisted Cursed Bunny, originally published in 2017 and in English in 2021, contains a total of ten short stories ranging from dark fairy tales to stark revenge fables and disturbing body horror. "The Head" follows a woman haunted by her own bodily waste. "Momhada" (몸하다 The Embodiment) takes us into a dystopian gynecology office where a pregnant woman is told that she must find a father for her baby or face horrific consequences. Another story follows a young monster, forced into underground fight rings without knowing the force of his own power. The titular fable centers on a cursed lamp in the approachable shape of a rabbit, fit for a child’s bedroom but for its sinister capabilities. Blurring the lines between magical realism, horror, and science fiction, Chung uses elements of the fantastic and the surreal to address the very real horrors and cruelties of patriarchy and capitalism in modern society.
Compared to the relatively restrained tone and language adopted in Cursed Bunny, Chung's most recent novel Bulgeun kal is a much more spectacular and dreamy war story. The heavily action-based narrative takes place in outer space and centers on the prisoners of an empire who are thrown into a war as cannon fodder against white, never-before-seen aliens. The novel is based on the 17th century Sino-Russian border conflict, in which the Qing dynasty sought reinforcements from the Joseon dynasty to combat the Russians. The author asks the true meaning of the struggle as the protagonists continue bloody, savage battles against the unknown without knowing why, but still attempting to maintain their dignity. "The heroes I know in this turbulent age are not generals commanding thousands of men under arms but those ordinary yet brave folks who jump into a seemingly endless struggle and never let go of the hands of the person next to them," Chung writes in the author's afterword. 정보라(1976~)는 대한민국의 소설가며 번역가다.
생애
정보라는 1976년 서울에서 태어났다. 필명으로 ‘정도경’을 사용하기도 했다. 연세대학교 인문학을 졸업하고 예일대학교에서 러시아 동유럽 지역학 석사, 인디애나 대학교에서 러시아 문학과 폴란드 문학연구로 문학 박사를 취득했다.
1998년 연세문화상에 단편 <머리>가 당선되었으며, 2008년 중편소설 〈호(狐)〉로 제3회 디지털작가상 모바일 부문 우수상을, 단편 〈씨앗〉으로 2014년 제1회 SF 어워드 단편부문 본상을 수상했다. 환상문학웹진 《거울》의 필진으로 활동하기도 했다. 호러 SF/판타지 소설을 창작하면서, 러시아를 비롯 슬라브어 권의 작품들을 번역하고 있으며 2022년 2월까지 연세대학교에서 러시아 문학과 SF소설에 대해 강의하기도 했다.
한편 2017년에 출간한 소설집 《저주토끼》가 2021년 영국에서 《Cursed Bunny》(Honford Star)로 번역되어 출간되었으며, 2022년 부커상 인터내셔날 부문 최종후보에 선정되었다. 소설집 《저주토끼》는 2021년 영국판 출간과 함께 독일, 노르웨이, 터키, 아르헨티나 등 전 세계적 관심과 주목을 받았다.
작가는 당대의 부조리한 현실에 대해 작품 뿐 아니라 현장에서 목소리를 내기도 했는데, 세월호의 유족들과 함께 진상규명을 촉구하는 시위에 참여했으며, 전국장애인차별철폐연대의 장애등급제 폐지 시위, 2020년 차별금지법과 중대재해처벌법 제정을 위한 오체투지(五體投地)에도 동참했다. 포항에서 전업 작가, 번역가로 일하며 포항여성회, 포항장애인차별철폐연대 등 활동에 참여하고 있다.
작품 세계
정보라는 삶과 죽음, 존재하는 것들 간의 관계에 대한 고민, 불의와 폭력에 노출된 여성의 생존과 싸움을 작품의 주요한 주제로 삼고 있다. 또한 가부장제와 자본주의 등 한국 사회의 부조리에 저항하는 글쓰기를 지속하며 차별과 폭력에 대한 분노, 희생자들에 대한 애도 등을 작품의 동력으로 삼고 있다. 한편 작가는 이러한 주제의식을 간결한 문체와 함축적인 대사로 소설화하여 대중들의 호응을 얻고 있다.
장편소설 《죽은 자의 꿈》(2012)은 삶과 죽음, 존재하는 것들 간의 관계에 대한 고민을 간결한 문체와 함축적인 대사를 통해 그려낸 작품이다.
소설집 《저주토끼》(2017) 동서고금(東西古今)을 넘나드는 배경과 인물, 사건들로 구성된 10편의 작품은 복수와 저주에 대해 공통적으로 다루고 있다. 작가는 특유의 상상력을 통해 가차 없는 저주로 복수를 대신한다. 이 책은 악착같은 저주와 복수에 관한 이야기이자, 위로에 관한 우화들이다. 2021년 영국에서 《Cursed Bunny》(Honford Star)라는 제목으로 번역 출간되었다.
소설집 《그녀를 만나다》(2021)는 성소수자 혐오에 맞서는 이들의 이야기를 다룬 표제작 <그녀를 만나다>를 비롯해서 가정폭력 피해 여성의 이야기 등 생존과 상실에 관한 이야기들을 묶은 것으로, 작가의 세계를 잘 보여주는 여덟 편이 수록되어 있다.
소설집 《여자들의 왕》(2022)은 상상의 세계의 중심을 남성에서 여성으로 옮겨 작가 특유의 쓸쓸하고도 담백한 문체로 풀어낸 이야기들이 수록되어 있다.
