After a lifelong search, the son of one of his wartime victims discovers his true identity, then proceeds calmly and deliberately to exact a terrible revenge.  Playing With Fire was awarded the prestigious Korean National Literature Prize upon its publication in 1982. Cho Chong-Rae's novella "Land of Exile" appeared in English translation in 1992. Cho subsequently published the immensely popular ten-volume historical novel The Taebaek Mountains (Taebaek Sanmaek), which sold millions in Korea in the late 1980s and was successfully adapted into a film. 1945. La Corée vient d'être libérée du joug colonial japonais. Comme tous les paysans et ouvriers exploités par un système féodal d'un autre âge, M. Bae, forgeron de son état, rêve d'un monde où les roturiers pourront enfin relever la tête. Mais la vague d'enthousiasme se transforma vite en désespoir. En application des résolutions de la conférence de Yalta, la Corée est divisée. Le 25 juin 1950 l'année nord-coréenne envahit le sud. Fervent partisan communiste, M. Bae croit que l'heure de la révolution est venue. Au nom de celle-ci il sème la terreur et massacre ses anciens maîtres coupables, à ses yeux, d'être des nobles. Mais le rêve est vite brisé. L'année populaire est refoulée au nord du 38e parallèle. Désespéré, notre homme, pour échapper à la justice, cache si bien son passé qu'il deviendra, à force de travail, un personnage influent dans le monde industriel de la Corée moderne. " J'ai réussi ! " dira-t-il. Un jour pourtant, le fils de l'une de ses victimes retrouve sa trace. L'heure de la vengeance a sonné.
