A poet of delicate sensibilities, Lee began his career depicting the gloomy everyday life under the Park Chung-hee military dictatorship in the 1970s and 1980s from the perspective of ordinary people—the subject he has explored with much love and sympathy. Such love has manifested in his desire to seek more than mere confessional release in his poetry: Lee aims to transform his art into a song for the suffering masses. His early poems are long and prose-like even, expressing his compassion towards the poor and the weak, and at the same time, embodying his fierce determination to preserve his humanity even amidst hardships. In 1990’s Lee’s poems became drastically shorter in length. Composed of no more than two or three lines, they came to resemble Zen Buddhist poems in their use of minimal language and compacted form to encapsulate profound meaning and symbolic resonance. Lee’s poems from this period recall the fact the poet had made his literary debut with sijo or traditional Korean poetry characterized by highly restricted form. Such evolution in Lee’s poetic mode indicates that the urgency and the wrenching emotions of his early years have been replaced with psychological calm and contemplative leisure. Lee has acknowledged that it is perfectly fine for him if his poems are no more than small “ripples” that carry his heart out to the readers and “lap at their feet for a moment like fallen leaves” before disappearing. Lee now hopes that in this age of excess, his poetry will remain just such small ripples. Lee’s poetry is at once a gentle reproach to overly emotional poets and at the same time the humble confession of an aging poet who has weathered much hardships and has remained true to his art.

LEE Si Young ist einer der Repräsentanten der Minjung-Dichtung. Seine Gedichte transponieren präzise Beschreibungen der realen Welt in rhythmische Klänge voller dunkler Ahnungen und Reflexionen. Seine Gedichte leben von der Zusammenführung des scheinbar Unvereinbaren. Um mit einem Bild zu sprechen: Seine Gedichte gleichen wohlgeformten Töpfen, in denen Geschichte und Individuen, Tradition und Moderne, lautes Sprechen und flüsternde Musik verbunden werden und sich dadurch neue Perspektiven auf die Gegensatzpaare eröffnen. In seinen Gedichten stellte er aus Sicht der leidenden Menschen die Ungerechtigkeiten der Gesellschaft dar. In seinen Werken kommen arme Leute wie einfache Bauern und Bäuerinnen, Dienstknaben und Dienstmädchen, Tagelöhner, arme Dichter usw. zu Wort. Er übersetzt ihre Lebensgeschichte, ihre Freude und Trauer in lyrische Sprache und bringt ihre Welt so zum Klingen. Seine Gedichte, die Prosa und Poesie wundervoll in Einklang bringen, sind geprägt von den Lebensgefühlen der einfachen Koreaner und Koreanerinnen.

Un poeta de sensibilidad delicada, empezó su carrera describiendo la vida diaria bajo la dictadura militar de Park Chung-hee en los setenta y en los ochenta desde la perspectiva de la gente corriente, un tema que ha explorado con amor y simpatía. Tal amor se ha manifestado bajo la forma de algo más que una poesía confesional: busca transformar su arte en una canción para las gentes que sufren. Sus primeros poemas son largos y prosísticos, expresan su compasión por el pobre y el débil, y al mismo tiempo manifiestan una fuerte determinación de conservar su humanidad incluso en medio de las dificultades.3

En los noventa sus poemas se volvieron mucho más cortos. Compuestos solo de dos o tres líneas, se parecen a los poemas budistas zen en su uso de un lenguaje mínimo y una forma compacta para sintetizar un mensaje profundo y una resonancia simbólica. Sus poemas de este periodo nos recuerdan que el poeta debutó con el sijo, que es la poesía tradicional coreana caracterizada por sus restricciones en la forma.4

Esa evolución en su poesía muestra que la urgencia y las acuciantes emociones de los primeros años han sido reemplazadas por la calma psicológica y el lujo contemplativo. Lee Si-young ha manifestado que le basta que sus poemas no sean más que pequeñas ondas que trasmiten su corazón a los lectores y "se queden en su regazo como hojas caídas antes de desaparecer". En esta época de excesos, desea que su poesía permanezca bajo la forma de pequeñas ondas. Su poesía es un suave reproche a los poetas excesivamente sentimentales y, al mismo tiempo, la humilde confesión de un poeta mayor que ha soportado grandes dificultades y se ha mantenido fiel a su arte.5

Poète à la sensibilité délicate, il a commencé par dépeindre la vie quotidienne difficile de ses concitoyens sous la dictature militaire de Park Chung-hee dans les années 1970 et 1980. Il a ainsi exploré le quotidien des gens ordinaires durant cette période avec beaucoup de compassion et de sympathie. Il cherche à transformer son art en une chanson pour les masses souffrantes. Ses premiers poèmes sont écrits en prose avec une métrique assez longue et expriment la compassion du poète envers les pauvres et les faibles, et dans le même temps, ils incarnent sa détermination farouche de préserver leur dignité, même au milieu des plus grandes difficultés3.

À partir des années 1990, ses poèmes sont devenus considérablement plus courts. Composés de pas plus de deux ou trois lignes, ils ont les mêmes caractéristiques que les poèmes bouddhistes zen, notamment dans l'utilisation d'un langage minimaliste et dans leur forme compactée. Les œuvres de cette période rappellent le fait que le poète avait fait ses débuts littéraires avec le sijo, forme poétique traditionnelle en Corée caractérisée par sa concision.

Cette évolution dans le style poétique indique que le lyrisme des premiers poèmes a laissé place à un certain apaisement et à la contemplation3.

1949年8月6日、全羅南道求礼郡に生まれる。1969年、中央日報新春文芸に時調『수(繍)』が当選、同年『月刊文学』新人賞に詩『채탄(採炭)』が当選し、登壇した。
李の詩の特徴は民衆的現実に基づいた現実批判の声である。1970年代の暴圧的な政治状況に抵抗した民衆の生活と思想を叙事的骨格の話すような詩にすることで、独特なリアリズム詩をみせた。1980年以降は、短い叙情詩を通じて民衆の希望を詠った。まるで仏教の禪詩のように高度に圧縮された形式の中で深い象徴性のある詩を発表した。
創作と批評社の編集長、副社長、民族文学作家会議のメンバー、中央大芸術大学院の教授、壇北大国際文芸創作センターのセンター長などを歴任した。
