Haeryông, petit port au nord de la Corée. C'est ici qu'est né Hyôndo, tout comme son père et son grand-père, propriétaire de bateaux. C'est ici que se joue l'histoire d'une famille en cet été qui débute pendant la seconde guerre mondiale et s'achève avec la mise en place du gouvernement communiste. En l'espace de quelques mois, le petit monde de Hyôndo, un garçon de neuf ans curieux et solitaire, bascule en même temps que celui des grands. Tous les jours, il est à son poste de guet dans le quartier où se trouve une stèle - cette " pierre tombale " témoin de l'Histoire - pour observer la démarche dandinante d'un marchand chinois, la violence de la police japonaise, ou l'arrivée de l'oncle, apportant avec lui les vestiges d'un passé que tous veulent oublier, l'opium, mais également la peur majeure de l'avenir : " la maladie d'Hiroshima ". A l'automne, quand les Japonais laissent la place aux Russes, et quand tous ceux qui possédaient se retrouvent démunis et acculés, les parents de Hyôndo doivent faire un choix rester et connaître la honte, ou partir et devenir des étrangers dans leur propre pays.
