Songsu Kim is orphaned when his father runs away from home and his mother takes poison. He is raised by his uncle, who chooses for him Punshi to be his wife. Together they have five daughters, all of whom lead cursed lives - the eldest is accused of infanticide; the second has a failed love affair; the third goes insane in her shameless pursuit of personal happiness; and the fourth has a grave accident at sea. Born in 1926, Park Kyong-ni is one of the most accomplished writers in Korea, best known for her voluminous novel Land (1994).
