故事以一个貌似言情小说的开头，引出了一个不走寻常路的知识分子几十年的命运起伏。诗人姜正吉年轻时代当过兵，蹲过牢，也曾有过艳遇；虽才华横溢，却因生性耿直，在职业场上屡屡碰壁。每当命运女神对他有所眷顾，便有小人暗算于他。为了承担起丈夫、父亲的角色，他在泥淖一般的社会里打拼几十年，不乏悲苦、辛酸与彷徨。面对一次次伪装的机遇，他始终坚持自己的操守不同流合污。末了，站在因受了诱惑误入歧途而暴病身亡的友人遗像面前，惟有他扪心自问能够无怨无悔。全书以美国诗人弗罗斯特的名诗《未选择的路》作为引子与尾声，寓意不言自明：一片树林里分出两条路/而我选择了人迹更少的一条/从此决定了我一生的道路。
