在一个偏僻的小渔村，住着村民称羡的兄弟两家。然，心胸狭窄的兄长屡屡无中生有地怀疑妻子不贞，甚至怀疑到与弟弟有染，致使妻子投海自尽。兄长幡然醒悟，到处寻找愤然离家出走的弟弟，闲余吟唱弟弟擅长的当地“船歌”。作品以第三者观察者的角度，采用了第一人称之人物转述，王人公兄长所言的形式。
