1931년 미국에서 영문으로 초판 출간된 강용흘의 자전적 장편소설이다. 1947년 한국어로 번역 출간되었다. 작품은 작가인 화자가 미국 유학을 준비하는 과정을 시간 순서대로 그리면서 동시에 1919년3.1운동 당시의 정황과 독립선어서 등 역사적인 사실을 정밀하게 다루고 있다.
