Plot

After Korea’s independence from the Japanese rule, the protagonist leaves Manchuria and returns to his homeland. There he has to take care of his mother, but he cannot lead a proper life. Then a friend who returned home with him from Manchuria offers to evict the person living in a house that used to be owned by a Japanese and let the protagonist and his mother live there. Yet on a cold winter day, knowing that the person who will get kicked out of the house will end up like him on a cold winter day, the narrator rejects the friend's proposal. He decides to head to his hometown in North Korea, but he learns that things are the same there as in Seoul.
