Plot

The main character, Moon Dae-yeong, a journalist and novelist, meets Sumiko, a Japanese woman, and becomes intimate with her. Sumiko proposes to Dae-yeong to abandon his wife and daughter and leave for Japan with her, but Dae-yeong is unable to make a decision. Afterward, he receives a letter from Sumiko, saying that she is leaving for China in search of a new life, and Dae-yeong realizes that he does not have the passion for a new start despite his frustration with reality.

This story expresses the helplessness intellectuals felt during the colonial period.

1940년 <인문평론>에 발표된 단편소설이다. 이 작품은 식민지 시기 지식인의 무기력한 내면을 표현한 작품으로 평가된다.
