Plot

At the end of the Silla dynasty, the main character, Gasil, is conscripted into the Silla army on behalf of the father of his beloved, and becomes a prisoner of war while fighting the Goguryeo army. After a long period of labor and imprisonment, Gasil comes to live in an old man's house in Goguryeo. The old man wants to marry his daughter Gasil, but Gasil cannot forget his lover he left behind in Silla. In the end, he leaves for Silla, promising to return to the old man’s house if his beloved in Silla is married.

This is a story based on the tale of “Seol’s Daughter and Gasil” in The History of the Three Kingdoms. Writer Yi Kwang-su was criticized for turning his eyes away from the realities of the time and focusing on stories in ancient Korean history, but it was highly praised for its reflection of humanity.

이 작품은 <삼국사기>에 실린 '설씨녀 설화'를 소설적으로 각색한 작품이다. 당대 현실로부터 눈을 돌려 역사 속 이야기에 주목했다는 점에서 작가인 이광수가 비판을 받았으나, 인간성에 대한 성찰을 보여주었다는 점에서 높은 평가를 받은 작품이다.
