Plot

Born in colonial Joseon, Hata is later adopted by a Japanese family. After the end of World War II, he immigrates to the United States, where he studies medicine and becomes a doctor. It is slowly revealed throughout the book that during the war, Hata had managed a ‘comfort woman’ station. Memories of those events continue to haunt him, causing him great distress.
