Plot

The narrator and M go to job interviews, where they are often kicked out for their “performances.” After one such interview, they are sitting on the subway train, untangling a ball of yarn they used for their performance, when a passenger asks them what they are doing. Unable to think of an answer, the narrator replies, “Art.” The next day, a photo of the two of them is published in a newspaper under the headline “Youth in the Arts,” and requests for interviews start pouring in.

This is a short story by Kim Junghyuk that was published in 2008 in his collection of short fiction The Library of Musical Instruments. The story deals with the problem of youth unemployment in Korean society; in portraying the main characters, and their bizarre behavior in the interview room, the author explores the question of what it is that young people want.
