- A new world; class-based society; anti-traditional intellectuals
Critical of the corrupt officialdom and class-based system of Neo-Confucian Joseon, Jeong Yakjeon and Hwang Sayeong seek an alternative way of organizing society. Jeong Yakjeon discovers Catholicism, a recent Western cultural import, which he believes can address the problems of Joseon society and usher in a new world. While working for the Catholic Church in Joseon, Hwang Sayeong, who fled to Jecheon to escape persecution, is caught and executed for having committed a “great crime.” Meanwhile, Jeong Yakjeon is exiled to Heuksando. Upon his arrival at Heuksan, he begins to work with the locals, helping to build a village school for the children and dedicating himself to their education.
