Plot

The narrator is a neighborhood friend of Gyeongju. Gyeongju’s oldest sister committed suicide after being raped while trying to help her partisan younger brother, and her second oldest sister has run away from home. Left by herself, Gyeongju believes her mother is responsible for her oldest sister’s suicide, and vows to kill her. Every night, the villagers are driven mad by the sound of the mother weeping.

1970년3월 <현대문학>에 발표한 윤흥길의 단편소설이다. 작품은 남과 북의 분단이 만들어낸 비극적인 역서 속에서 정상적인 삶을 살 수 없었던 개인들의 상처와 분열을 극적으로 제시하고 있다. 작가는 작중 인물들의 불안한 내면을 섬세하게 포착하여 미래없는 당대의 모습을 드러내었다.

This short story by Yun Heunggil was published in Hyundae Munhak in March 1970. It dramatically depicts the pain and suffering of individuals whose lives have been devastated by the tragic division between North and South Korea. In delicate prose, the author captures the inner anxiety of characters living in an era without a future.
