Plot

Eok soe is reputed as a man of great strength in Hwangtogol. But he maintains a quiet life due to the superstition that a strongman brings bad luck to the village. Then one day, he fights with Deuk-bo who came to his village over a girl named Seol-hui. Seeing that the two men are interested in Seol-hui, Eok-soe’s wife Bun-yi becomes jealous and ends up killing Seol-hui. She stabs Deuk-bo and runs away. Deuk-bo chases after her, but he returns a while later with his daughter. Eok-soe and Deuk-bo both blame each other for the disappearance of Bun-yi

Descriptions(Languages 2)

This is a short story published in the fourth issue of Munjang in May 1939. The story follows a folktale that is passed down in “Hwangtogol,” emphasizing the inseparable relationship between the story and the folktale. The folktale of Hwangtogol, which signifies descent, curse, and castration, is considered a work that symbolized colonial Korea as the land of cursed fate.
