2002년에 출간된 이어령의 소설집이다. 표제작을 비롯하여 <홍동백서>, <암살자>, <어느 소년을 위한 서사시>등 모두 7편이 수록되어 있다. 작가가 작품을 발표했던 1960년대 당시의 정치적 상황(4.19혁명 등)을 작품에 반영하고 무엇보다 새로운 소설의 형식을 다양하게 실험하는 작품을 썼다. 포스트모던 소설기법, 인터텍스추럴리, 인용 등 당시의 소설에서는 찾아보기 어려운 방법을 소설에 적용했다는 점에서 주목을 받았다.

This collection of novels by Lee O Young was published in 2002. It contains seven stories, including “Hongdong Baekseo,” “Assassin,” “An Epic Poem for a Certain Boy,” and the title story. A reflection on the April 19 Revolution and other political events in the 1960s, the story drew critical attention for its experimentation with the novel form and use of postmodern literary techniques, such as citations and intertextuality.
