Plot

Ureuk, a gayageum maker from the Gaya kingdom, surrenders to Silla forces when Gaya collapses. With the support of King Jinheung of Silla, he continues to make the gayageum and sing, but the sadness inside him does not go away.

2004년에 출간된 김 훈의 장편소설이다. 작품은 가야금 예인(藝人) 우륵의 일생을 기록한 소설이다. 작가는 가야금을 만드는 우륵이 조국의 몰락과 함께 변하는 현실에 적응하기 위해 신라에 투항하는 과정과 그 내면을 섬세하게 기록했다. 예술가 우륵의 고통과 슬픔을 정치와 예술, 권력과 욕망, 제도와 현실 등을 중심으로 함께 보여준다.

This novel by Kim Hoon was published in 2004. A depiction of the life of Ureuk, a gayageum artist, the novel meticulously documents Ureuk’s thoughts and feelings regarding the fall of his country as he submits to Silla in an attempt to adjust to a new political reality. The work portrays Ureuk’s pain and sorrow alongside the themes of politics and art, power and desire, system and reality.
