Trong tác phẩm Lưỡi, tác giả lấy bối cảnh Hàn Quốc nhưng ít màu sắc Hàn Quốc. Người đọc gặp ở đây một nữ nhân vật là đầu bếp tài ba chuyên món Ý và am hiểu văn hóa Ý. Thông qua đó, tác giả đề cập đến một câu chuyện thất tình xen kẽ trong nghệ thuật ẩm thực. Theo tác giả thì người phụ nữ có thể quyến rũ người tình thông qua những món ăn ngon. Vậy tình yêu là gì? Jo Kyung Ran suy nghĩ đó là vàng, kim cương, hay thậm chí là nấm truyp? “Tình yêu là thứ mà ai cũng muốn có nhưng không thể tự làm ra được, giống nấm truyp, kim cương, và vàng. Dù là gì, tình yêu cũng là thứ mọi người đều khao khát nhưng chẳng ai tự làm ra được”.
