Plot

Han Giju volunteers for the Vietnam War. He becomes frustrated by the tragic deaths of innocent civilians, and the way other men betray and deceive one another, even during combat. After surviving the battlefield, Giju returns to Korea suffering from war trauma.

1993년에 출간된 안정효의 장편소설이다.  작품은 베트남전에 참전했던 주인공을 퉁해 전쟁의 참상과 아무도 책임지지 않는 민간인의 죽음을 고발하고 있다. 국가 간의 전쟁에서 허무하게 목숨을 잃는 것은 민간인, 그 중에서도 가난한 민중들 뿐임을 작가는 여러 인간의 군상을 통해 보여주며 참혹했던 전쟁터를 보여주고 있다.

This novel by Ahn Junghyo was published in 1993. Through its protagonist, a Korean soldier fighting in the Vietnam War, it gives a searing account of the horrors of that war and the lack of accountability. In particular, it shows how civilians – and the poorest among them – suffer the most in war, losing their lives in vain in a conflict between nations.
