Plot

While in college, the narrator frequently hangs out with Hanako, K, and J, thinking they are closer to each other than anyone else. “Hanako” is the group’s nickname for Jang Jinja, the only girl among them. But one day, Hanako disappears without explanation. Time passes, and the narrator finds out that the three boys had separately confessed their feelings to Hanako, only for her to reject all of them. Later, the narrator learns that each of them had known a different Hanako.

This short story by Choe Yun was published in Literature & Thought in June 1994, and won the Yi Sang Literary Award. In 2012, it was published as the 13th volume of the Asia Publishers Bi-lingual Edition Series. The story concerns the memories that several people have of a single woman, each remembering her differently without truly knowing her for who she was. In this way the author questions the reality of human existence, and whether people can truly know each other.
