2008년에 출간된 조경란의 소설집이다. 표제작을 비롯하여 <형란의 첫번째 책>, <밤이 깊었네>, 마흔에 대한 추측>, <달걀>등 모두 8편의 작품이 수록되어 있다. 작가는 이번 소설집에서 글쓰기에 대한 자의식과 작가로서의 고독을 회피하지 않고 면밀히 살피고 있다. 특히 유사가족들과의 관계, 그리고 읽고 쓰는 것의 어려움과 책의 의미 등을 통해 외로움이라는 공포에서 벗어나는 순간을 그리고 있다.

This short story collection by Jo Kyung Ran was published in 2008. It contains eight short stories in total, including “Hyeongran’s First Book,” “The Night Had Deepened,” “Speculation About Being Forty,” “Egg,” and the title story. In this collection, the author closely examines the solitude and self-consciousness of writing. In particular, it depicts moments in which the fear of loneliness is overcome through relationships with family members, the challenge of reading and writing, and the meaning of books.
