Plot

Junbo is grieving over the loss of his wife when he meets Oksil. They fall in love, and Junbo and his children move in with Oksil. As they settle into their new home, they are met with censure and disapproval. Junbo’s friend Yun Byeokdo advises them to take caution and act according to their proper status as famous figures in the literary and musical worlds, noting especially that, for the sake of Junbo’s literary career, they should not get married. Unable to endure the spreading rumors and hostility of others, Oksil bids Junbo farewell and leaves for Japan.

1942년1월 잡지<춘추>에 발표한 이효석의 단편소설이다. 2003년에 출간된 <이효석전집>(제3권)에 수록되어 있다. 작품은 주인공 남녀의 사랑과 그 사랑에 대한 세상사람들의 편견을 다루고 있다. 작가는 문학을 공부한 남자와 음악을 공부한 여자가 세상의 편견과 떠도는 소문의 벽을 넘지 못하고 그들의 사랑을 포기하는 과정을 그리고 있다.

This short story by Lee Hyoseok was published in the magazine Chunchu in January 1942. It is included in the third volume of The Collected Works of Lee Hyoseok, which was published in 2003. A story about an ill-fated love, the work describes how an educated couple give up on their love, unable to endure the prejudice they face in society.
