Plot

This novel describes the life of a Korean intellectual from the early 1900s to the March 1st Movement on March 1, 1919. The work gives insight into intellectual society during this turbulent period in history, and describes the shock of encountering new cultures and civilizations.

1985년에 출간된 안수길의 장편소설이다. 이 작품은 1968년11월부터 1969년11월까지  잡지<현대문학>에 <통로>라는 제목으로 1부를 발표하고, 1971년~1973년에 <통로>의 2부인 <성천강>을 잡지 <신동아>에 발표했으며, 1973년 3.1문화상을 받았다. 작가는 사회적 변환기를 통과한 지식인의 내면과 당시의 사회상을 꼼꼼하게 그렸다.

This novel by An Sugil was published in 1985. It was originally serialized in a number of literary magazines: the first half of the novel appeared in Hyundae Munhak from November 1968 to November 1969, and the second in Shindonga between 1971 and 1973 under the title Seongcheon River. The work received the Samil Cultural Award in 1973. With meticulous detail, the author depicts the inner life of an intellectual who lived during a period of social transformation.
