1989년에 전체 10권으로 출간된 조정래의 장편역사소설이다. 1983년9월부터 1989년 11월까지 <현대문학>과 <한국문학>에 연재했었다. 작품은 1945년8월 해방직후부터 한국전쟁까지의 시기를 대상으로 분단과 반공이데올로기로 인한 대립과 갈등을 보여준다. 작품은 전체 4부로 구성되어 있다. 제1부는 1945년8월 해방직후부터 1948년 12월 빨치산 홝약, 제2부는 여순반란 사건이후 10개월, 제3부는 1949년 10월부터 1950년12월 한국전쟁 시작 직후, 제4부는 1950년12월부터 1953년7월 휴전협정 직후까지를 다뤘다. 분단상황에 비판적 인식이 잘 드러난 작품으로 고평받았다.

This ten-volume historical saga by Jo Jung-Rae was originally serialized in Modern Literature and Korean Literature from September 1983 to November 1989, before being published in book form in 1989. It depicts in four parts the confrontations and conflict caused by anti-communist ideology and the division of Korea: the first part begins immediately after the liberation in August 1945, and leads up to the partisan activities of December 1948; the second part is set ten months after the Yeosun Rebellion; the third part spans the period from October 1949 to December 1950, right after the start of the Korean War; and the fourth part covers the events from December 1950 to the armistice agreement in July 1953. It received praise for its critical awareness of the division of Korea.
