Plot

When her father squanders all the family fortune by rice speculation, Cho-bong marries Go Tae-su, a womanzing banker. Jang Hyeong-bo kills Go Tae-su and rapes Cho-bong. After leaving her hometown, Cho-bong becomes Pak Je-ho’s concubine. After some time, Cho-bong gives birth to a girl (Song-hui). Jang Hyeong-bo finds Cho-bong and harasses her, saying that Song-hui is his daughter. Unable to hold in her anger, Cho-bong kills Hyeong-bo with a millstone and turns herself in.

This is a novel, serialized in The Chosun Ilbo from October 1937 to May 1938. Through the narrative of a woman’s hardships, it provides a detailed description of the Japanese exploitation of colonial Korea, Korean customs and view of love at this time.

1937년 10월부터 1938년 5월에 걸쳐 <조선일보>에 연재된 장편소설이다. 이 작품은 여성수난의 서사를 통해 식민지 수탈 상황과 풍속, 연애관 등을 정밀하게 묘사하고 있다.
