Plot

The narrator investigates old stories and rumors from the past, such as those surrounding Ga Huidong’s aunt, whose second husband died three months into their marriage; the classmate who defected to North Korea while serving in the military; and a younger brother and his fiancée, the former having died under suspicious circumstances after being forcibly conscripted because of his brother’s involvement in protests against the Yushin reforms. The narrator makes a record of these tragic, forgotten stories, each indirectly connected to events in modern Korean history.

This novel by Jo Eun was published in 2003. The author, a sociologist and scholar of women’s studies, depicts both the wounds of the war and the redacted narratives of women by writing from the point of view of a main character with an absent father and firsthand experience of the Korean War.
