Yi Mongryong, the son of the governor of Namwon, and Chunhyang, the daughter of a gisaeng, fall in love after a fateful encounter on the day of the Dano Festival. They are forced to part, however, when Mongryong goes away to take his civil service entrance examination. While waiting for Myongrong’s return, Chunhyang is propositioned by a high-ranking official recently posted to Namwon. When she rebuffs him, she is arrested and then imprisoned. Finally, Mongryong returns, having passed the examination with flying colors, and orders Chunhyang’s release.
