Plot

Yi Mongryong, the son of the governor of Namwon, and Chunhyang, the daughter of a gisaeng, fall in love after a fateful encounter on the day of the Dano Festival. They are forced to part, however, when Mongryong goes away to take his civil service entrance examination. While waiting for Myongrong’s return, Chunhyang is propositioned by a high-ranking official recently posted to Namwon. When she rebuffs him, she is arrested and then imprisoned. Finally, Mongryong returns, having passed the examination with flying colors, and orders Chunhyang’s release.

판소리 다섯 마당 가운데 하나다. 작품은 양반의 아들 이몽룡과 기생의 딸 춘향의 사랑이야기로, 사설의 문학성과 소리의 음악성이 뛰어나 현재까지 다양하게 변주되며 오랜 시간 사랑을 받고 있는 작품이다. 특히 춘향의 <옥중가>는 그 비극성과 슬픔이 잘 드러나 있는 곡이다.
