Plot

In an underground radio broadcast, the former Japanese governor-general of Korea gives a speech, revealing that he has been in hiding on the Korean peninsula since the end of Japanese colonial rule, lying in wait in the hopes that the Japanese empire will rise again.

Published in 1994, this is the ninth volume of Choi In-hun’s collected stories. The Voice of the Governor General is a collection of four linked stories that were originally published separately: the first two in 1967, the third in 1968, and the fourth in 1976. Offering an alternate vision of a neocolonial Korea, the work satirizes the political chaos in the country ahead of the ratification of the 1965 treaty normalizing relations with Japan.
